Dear Members and Friends of the SSQ,
Here I am, sitting on the back veranda, the day after the AGM, wondering what I have done...! Thank you all for electing me as the new president. The bill for the dye to cover up the extra grey hair will go the club. &
I am lucky to have a great team supporting me and we look forward to presenting you with an interesting program for 2014.
First I would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to Ruth and Vreni for all the hard work they have put in over the past two years. Ruth will keep organising our Dinner Dances, the first will be held on Saturday, 1 March 2014 and being “Fasnacht/Carnival” time it will be a fun evening.
Vreni is busy with moving house but afterwards, we will see more of her. Vreni, don’t forget we are waiting for the house warming party.
José Jungo is back in the committee after a short absence.
We have two new members in the Committee. Anita Farine takes up the role of Secretary and Nina Welti is the Vice-President. Anita grew up near Basel and in 1968 came to Sydney with her parents and siblings. She has been back to Switzerland to spend some time in Neuchâtel. She has lived in Brisbane for nearly 20 years and has been active in the Swiss Club for almost as long. Anita has an international brokerage for boats and yachts.
Nina was born in London to her Swiss dad and Finnish mum, but grew up in the US (Atlanta, GA). After living in Vienna for 8 years, Nina moved to Brisbane in 2012 to work at UQ as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Civil Engineering.
The committee’s plan is to attract more families and younger people to functions to guarantee the continuity of the club. One idea we picked up from the floor was to have a couple of Sunday BBQs.
We are also in the process of activating the bushwalks again. The idea is to have an easy, family-friendly one and another for the more serious hikers. For this we already have a great guide in Peter Zuend. He knows a lot of interesting hikes and looks forward to sharing them with us.
We also put the bus trip back on the agenda, which will take place on 16 February 2014. José already went on an inspection trip.
The regular Jass and Tennis evenings are still on with Jass already kicking off on 9 January.
The Qld Jass Meisterschaft will be held on 27 April at the Club and the 4th AU Championship will be in Adelaide over the June long weekend. It gives us Jassers a reason to travel and to catch up with old friends. And of course meeting the Jassers from all the different States is always great fun. So anyone who is a bit rusty, it’s the time to join us and get back into it again. We don’t bite or yell ;-)
We also have great plans for the 1 August celebrations. We shared some ideas at the AGM, which were well received from the floor. The full program will be in the next Swiss News/online as we are still in the planning stage.
With this I close for today and wish you all a Merry Christmas, en guete Rutsch and a Happy New Year.
Hope to see you at some of the functions and have a chat.
Your President, Rita von Rotz
